Step 2

Step 2: Collect User Information

Purpose:
Know how many people use the CAP and their stories to obtain anecdotes and statistics that prove the success of public access computing services.

a. Set up a system to monitor the number the quantity of individual using your computer, the personal information of the users and their reasons for using the computers (even their stories)

• Size and density of targeted population
• Breakdown of population by age range, sex, ethnic background, language of choice, level of education
• Proportion of employed to unemployed, average income level, predominant types of employment or occupation

Here are a few tips:

• Prepare a sign-in sheet for people and include sections of purpose for using the computers and identification such as students, senior citizens, etc

• Prepare a short survey to gather the personal data as well as the satisfaction rate of CAP site.

• Talk to your patrons and know what their needs at CAP site. Probe for success stories and keep these examples in a notebook.

• If CAP site host a computer class or event, record the number of attendees each time. Note the approximate age of each attendee and his or her interests based on the question asked. Have the attendees complete an evaluation form after class.

b. Apply the data to the outreach efforts

For example, include the average number of computer users per
month in a letter to a public official or include an anecdote in your newsletter.

Step 1

Step 1: Goals and Challenges

Purpose: Develop a plan to build and sustain your Community Access Program

Before starting any of changes activities, it is crucial that you first define what you want to accomplish and then identify challenges and solutions.

• Have a Good Definition of “Sustainability”

Sustainability means more than having enough funding for your program to survive. It might include:

a. Independence
b. The ability to replicate programs
c. A sense of community ownership
d. A strong program and organizational identity
e. The ability to expand services
f. Meeting a community’s needs
g. Integration with other programs in the organization

• Define your goals

What would you like your CAP site to look like? Who will provide the main support for the technology and the staff? Who will be the major users of CAP sites? What benefits do you expect the community to gain from the service?

• Develop a Meaningful Mission Statement

Think of your CAP’s mission as centered on something other than technology is always more sustainable. By keeping your focus on your core mission and addressing basic needs in your community, you will more trusted than if you recreate your organization every few years to address funder’s latest issue of the day.

• Identify Potential Challenges

There are many factors to consider here: expansion plans, necessary upgrades, the need for securing technical support, ongoing volunteer and staff training, possible budget cuts and fund raising.

• Develop possible solution to these challenge and plans to reach your goals

What resources can you find or leverage to help you sustain your CAP sites?

Linksys Wireless PTZ Internet Camera with Audio

The Linksys Wireless-G Pan/Tilt/Zoom Video Camera sends live video through the Internet to a web browser anywhere in the world!

The advanced MPEG-4 video compression produces a high-quality, high-framerate, up to 640x480 video stream. MPEG-4 encoding facilitates good video quality in varying bandwidth environments. WVC200 also supports MJPEG compression for video, providing good video quality at high bandwidth rates.

The comprehensive video features include an IR filter cut which allow you to see the images in low or no light environments when an IR lamp is used. Snapshots (in JPEG format) of the image can be taken and saved.Snapshots can also be scheduled and sent to an FTP server.

If you want the video to be visible from a remote location or from the Internet, you can open an appropriate port on the Router, and then create password protected accounts to manage access to the camera, or leave it wide open for the world to see. Support for Dynamic DNS lets you access your camera using an easy-to-remember “name”, even while using a dynamic IP address. The Pan/Tilt and digital zoom function allows you to remotely control the camera movement and focus, giving you maximum flexibility remotely.  Recording can be set up to record by motion trigger, manual or schedule recording and playback on Windows Media Player without the need for a proprietary player.

You can also turn on Security Mode, which tells the camera to send a message with a short video attached to up to three email addresses whenever it detects motion in its field of view. You can then log onto the live video stream if the situation warrants. Wireless security features include WEP and WPA.

Content Systems

Maintaining a large website can be difficult, however, there are software packages that allow you to easily run a large site with a simple editor provided though a web interface, as well as custom themes, plug-ins to do almost anything you require for your site, as well as support for when you get stuck. PCNA uses joomla for most of our large sites. We also can setup you your own joomla installation for your site.

What is Joomla! ? PDF Print E-mail

Joomla! is an award-winning Content Management System (CMS) that will help you build websites and other powerful online applications. Best of all, Joomla! is an open source solution that is freely available to everybody.

Joomla! in Action

Joomla! is used all over the world to power everything from simple, personal homepages to complex corporate web applications. Here are just some of the ways people use our software:

  • Corporate websites or portals
  • Online commerce
  • Small business websites
  • Non-profit and organizational websites
  • Government applications
  • Corporate intranets and extranets
  • School and church websites
  • Personal or family homepages
  • Community-based portals
  • Magazines and newspapers
  • the possibilities are limitless…

Joomla! can be used to easily manage every aspect of your website, from adding content and images to updating a product catalog or taking online reservations.

Joomla! for End Users

The basic Joomla! package is designed to be easy to install, even for non-programmers. Most people have no trouble getting our software up and running, and there is plenty of support available for newbies. We have a growing, active community of more than 40,000 friendly users and developers on our forums eager to help.

Once Joomla! is installed and running, it is simple for even non-technical users to add or edit content, update images, and to manage the critical data that makes your company or organization go. Anybody with basic word processing skills can easily learn to manage a Joomla! site.

Via a simple, browser-based interface you will be able to easily add new press releases or news items, manage staff pages, job listings, product images, and create an unlimited amount of sections or content pages on your site. You can try our simple demo to get quick taste of what Joomla! is all about.

Taking Joomla! to the Next Level

Out of the box, Joomla! does a great job of managing the content needed to make your website sing. But for many people, the true power of Joomla! lies in the application framework that makes it possible for thousands of developers around the world to create powerful add-ons and extensions. Here are just some examples of the hundreds of available extensions:

  • Dynamic form builders
  • Business or organizational directories
  • Document management
  • image and multimedia galleries
  • E-commerce and shopping cart engines
  • Forums and chat software
  • Calendars
  • Blogging software
  • Directory services
  • Email newsletters
  • Data collection and reporting tools
  • Banner advertising systems
  • Subscription services
  • and many, many more…

You can find more examples over at our growing Joomla! Extensions Directory. Prepare to be amazed at the amount of exciting work produced by our active developer community!

Joomla! for Developers

Many companies or organizations have requirements that go beyond what is available in the basic Joomla! package or in a freely available extension.

Thankfully, Joomla! offers a powerful application framework that makes it easy for developers to create sophisticated add-ons that extend the power of Joomla! into virtually unlimited directions.

Using the core framework, developers can easily build:

  • Integrated e-commerce systems
  • Inventory control systems
  • Data reporting tools
  • Custom product catalogs
  • Complex business directories
  • Reservation systems
  • Communication tools
  • Application bridges
  • or any kind of application to suit a unique need…

If your company or organization hires a third party Joomla! developer or builds in-house software using the Joomla! framework, you are building on an open platform that does not tie you to any one developer or to a proprietary, closed application.

You can learn more about developing on the Joomla! framework over at our developer’s network. The beauty of Joomla! is that you can leverage our framework and user interface to deliver applications to your end users in a familiar, powerful environment.

So what’s the catch?

There is no catch. Joomla! is free, open, and available to all under the GPL license. We don’t claim to be perfect, and can’t promise to meet every requirement in the world. But for many web applications, our software is perfectly suited for the job. We are adding great new features with each release, and with the help and advice of our incredible user community we plan on delivering award-winning software for years to come.

Online Conferencing

We are pleased to offer a variety of e-conferencing solutions for CAP and other PCNA members.  We currently offer access to private e-conferencing rooms using the Elluminate Live (formerly VClass) environment.  In addition, we would like to invite anybody who is interested to beta test a similar software environment called DimDim, which is also available on our server.

NEW FOR 2008:  You no longer are required to prebook rooms with the PCNA. Simply Visit the following website. http://dimdim.pcna.ca/dimdim/

If you would rather youse Elluminate Live, please send us an email as we still require booking for that software.  danny@pcna.ca This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

For first-time users of Elluminate Live, the PCNA can also provide guided introductions of the environment upon request.

Dimdim offers a comprehensive feature set at a price point much lower than the industry standard.

  • Presentation and Document sharing: Interactive real-time Collaboration over documents and presentations allows enhanced expression and exchange of ideas.
  • Audio and video sharing: High-quality multi-party video and audio sharing can be used to personalize meetings with a face-to-face approach.
  • Application sharing: Full screen as well as specific application sharing from a Presenter’s computer can be used to show and educate even a novice audience. This is in keeping with the "show, don’t tell" principle.
  • White board and Annotations: Realistic interactive collaboration which involves a lot of annotations, corrections, group drawing (and doodles in the margin) is enabled through digital whiteboard and annotations feature of Dimdim. These features are possible on existing documents too leading to seamless distributed brainstorming.
  • Chat: As in any real world meeting there will be sub-groups of people engaged in conversation and exchange of ideas (some serious ones others more like “kicks under the table”) within the larger assembly in a web conference. This is facilitated through the multi-user chat feature.
  • Polls: Polls enable the presenter to gauge the mood of the participants and to take decisions considering the opinions of many.
  • Question manager: Question manager which is like a moderated Q&A setup enables the presenter to better manage the interaction.
  • Record and Archive: All the interaction is recorded and archived for sharing with non-attendees and to reach a broader audience.
